These huge concrete pieces, called jacks, are stacked in piles all over the coast of Japan to break up the waves coming in, to protect fishing interests, and to keep the beaches from eroding. I wanted to experiment with shooting black and white film. The ideal location, I thought, would be to photograph this infrastructure the Japanese use to protect their shoreline. The commercial photo processor at Misawa AB couldn't really do black and white. Instead, the black and white film would be developed in color chemicals, though I was told I could print in just blue tones.
